The Murgo estate is situated in a privileged position southeast of Mount Etna and has been making wines traditional to this territory since 1850.
In 1981 Baron Emanuele Scammacca del Murgo modernized the estate to optimize the quality of his wines, and his sons Michele, Pietro, and Matteo focus on that same goal in their daily work in the vineyards and cellar. The unique conditions created by the volcano make for wines with unusual finesse, aromatic complexity, and strong personality. More
Murgo therefore, is the wine of Etna, wich is produced at the San Michele Holding situated on the eastern slopes of the volcano between Taormina and Catania. Yet it is also oil, jams and marmalades, products from the Gelso Bianco Holding, situated on Etna’s south facing slopes.
On going research and development with superior varieties, is intrinsic to the Murgo name. This, together with the high quality of our products and their strong link to the land are the fundamental aspects of our production.
The Scammacca del Murgo’s family holdings have undergone gradual but constant nvestment. Consequently, they have been transformed from ancient feudal properties to modern agricultural companies, optimising production techniques and financing continous research.
Our olives are from the olive groves at the Tenuta del Gelso Bianco, on Etna’s southern slopes. There are 5000 Nocellara dell’Etna trees in the grove. Here the land has always been involved in olive production.
The hand-picked harvest takes place during the second ten days of October. The olives which are just changing colour are picked and cold pressed in the same day. The oil produced is naturally decanted in stainless steel vats. However, it is not filtered. Thereby allowing the oil to maintain its original characteristics.
